The Heart of the Rio Grande Valley

McAllen, Texas is a city located in the southernmost part of Texas, near the border with Mexico. With a population of over 140,000 people, McAllen is the largest city in Hidalgo County.  It serves as the commercial, cultural, and educational hub for the Rio Grande Valley.

 

Sporting and Outdoor Adventures

McAllen is situated in a region of Texas known for its natural beauty.  The city itself has a number of parks and outdoor spaces for residents and visitors to enjoy. The McAllen Nature Center is a 33-acre wildlife sanctuary that is home to over 300 species of birds, while the Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park offers hiking, biking, and birdwatching opportunities. The city also has a number of golf courses, including the Palm View Golf Course and the McAllen Country Club.

 

Cultural Experiences

McAllen, Texas is home to several museums that explore the city's rich cultural heritage.  The International Museum of Art & Science offers a variety of exhibits and educational programs that showcase art, science, and culture from around the world. IMAS has a vast collection of art, including works by famous artists like Pablo Picasso and Diego Rivera.  The McAllen Heritage Center is dedicated to preserving and promoting the city's rich history. The museum features exhibits on the city's founding, its growth and development, and the people who have contributed to its success.  Quinta Mazatlan is a historic mansion located in the heart of McAllen. The mansion was built in the 1930s and has since been restored and converted into a nature and cultural center. The museum offers visitors the chance to learn about the local flora and fauna, as well as the history and culture of the Rio Grande Valley.

 

Entertainment and Events

McAllen, Texas is a vibrant city that offers a wide range of entertainment and events throughout the year.  The McAllen Performing Arts Center is a state-of-the-art venue that hosts concerts, theater productions, and live performances. The center features a 1,800-seat auditorium, as well as a smaller, more intimate theater.  Owned by the city of Hidalgo, The Payne Arena, features a 7,000 seat arena that is home to some of the best concerts and shows in the Rio Grande Valley.  The South Texas International Film Festival is an annual event that showcases independent films from around the world. The festival features screenings, Q&A sessions with filmmakers, and networking opportunities for industry professionals.  Fiesta de Palmas is a two-day festival that celebrates the culture and heritage of the Rio Grande Valley. The festival features live music, food vendors, artisanal crafts, and family-friendly activities.

The Ballet Folklorico South Texas College is composed of about 35 dancers and students.  They put on various performances throughout the year at the McAllen Performing Arts Center and compete at dance competitions throughout the state.
